YOU HAD TO BE THERE: Vista del Lago Takes the City in a 21–14 Thriller
MORENO VALLEY — You had to be there.
Not because the scoreboard exploded. Not because the game was easy. You had to be there because every yard felt personal, every stop carried the weight of a city, and every snap reminded everyone watching that Moreno Valley football is different when two hometown programs meet under the lights.
Vista del Lago walked into Moreno Valley High School on Thursday night and walked out with the city’s loudest statement of the young season, defeating the previously unbeaten Vikings 21–14. The Ravens did not win with empty hype. They won with toughness, discipline and the kind of fourth-quarter nerve that separates a good team from a team ready to be taken seriously.
The final numbers tell part of the story. Vista produced 159 rushing yards and 47 passing yards, leaning on a physical ground game while its defense kept one of the Inland Empire’s hottest teams from taking control. Moreno Valley entered the matchup 3–0 after scoring 111 points across its first three victories. Vista held the Vikings to 14.
That is not just a win. That is a warning.
The Ravens are now 3–1, and their résumé already includes city wins over Valley View and Moreno Valley. The same program that piled up 304 rushing yards against Valley View showed it could win a completely different kind of game against the Vikings. When the city showdown became tight, tense and unforgiving, Vista stayed together.
The Ravens’ season leaders explain why this team can hurt opponents in so many ways. Jae’lynn Brown is averaging 172 receiving yards per game. Mikya Adams is averaging 111 rushing yards per game. Quarterback Josiah Dupree-Boyd has accounted for six total touchdowns. On defense, Isaac Gonzalez is averaging 10.8 tackles per game, Alijah Shivers has four sacks, and Tristin James has two interceptions.
Stars matter, but Thursday night felt bigger than any one name. It was a full-team city win—a defense refusing to surrender momentum, an offense finding enough answers, and a sideline believing it belonged in the biggest moment.
For Moreno Valley, the loss does not erase a powerful start. For Vista del Lago, the win changes the conversation. The Ravens are no longer simply one of the city’s dangerous teams. Right now, they own the city’s biggest result.
The final score was Vista del Lago 21, Moreno Valley 14. The atmosphere, tension and city pride were much bigger than seven points.
You had to be there. But if you missed it, understand this: Raven Nation showed up, stood tall and left with the city watching.
