J5: Josiah Dupree-Boyd Enters His Junior Year With Moreno Valley Watching

MORENO VALLEY, Calif. — Before the four-star ranking. Before the national offers. Before college coaches started making their way to Moreno Valley to see him throw, Josiah Dupree-Boyd was simply a freshman being asked to take the keys to a varsity offense.

He did not play like one.

Known around the city as J5, Dupree-Boyd stepped into the quarterback job at Vista del Lago and immediately changed the conversation. As a freshman in 2024, MaxPreps credited him with 2,052 passing yards, 23 touchdown passes and an 8-3 season for the Ravens. Sports Illustrated later included him among the quarterbacks to watch in the CIF Southern Section playoffs, noting how rare it was to see a freshman on that list.

THE CITY SAW IT FIRST

The numbers mattered, but the bigger story was the responsibility. Quarterback is the position where every mistake is visible and every decision is judged. J5 was not easing into varsity football behind an older starter. He was the starter. He was making checks, delivering the football, extending plays and carrying an offense while still learning what Friday nights at the varsity level demanded.

By the end of that freshman season, the question was no longer whether he could handle varsity football. The question had become how high his ceiling could go.

THE SOPHOMORE EXPLOSION

Then came 2025.

As a sophomore, Dupree-Boyd elevated again. On3 reported that he completed 172 of 278 passes for 2,620 yards, 19 touchdowns and only three interceptions. He also became a major threat with his legs, rushing for 462 yards and nine touchdowns.

Across his first two varsity seasons, that gives J5 4,672 passing yards and 42 passing touchdowns before the first snap of his junior year. A recent Sports Illustrated recruiting report credited him with 54 total touchdowns through those first two seasons when his rushing production is included.

That is not potential anymore. That is production.

FROM MORENO VALLEY TO THE NATIONAL BOARD

The rest of the football world has caught up to what Moreno Valley has been watching.

Rivals currently lists Dupree-Boyd as a four-star Class of 2028 quarterback at roughly 6-foot-4 and 175 pounds. Its current industry ranking places him among the top quarterbacks in the country and among California’s top prospects. ESPN also lists him as a Class of 2028 quarterback from Vista del Lago, while the Los Angeles Times included him among the Southern California junior quarterbacks entering 2026 with established resumes.

His recruitment has moved into national territory. Rivals/On3 currently lists offers that include Oregon, UCLA, Ohio State, Arizona State and Kentucky, among others. Ohio State offered him after an in-person camp evaluation in June, adding another heavyweight program to a list that had already been growing throughout the spring and summer.

WHY J5 MATTERS TO THE CITY

Moreno Valley has always had athletes. The challenge has often been getting the rest of Southern California — and the country — to look east and pay attention.

J5 is part of a generation changing that.

He did not have to leave the city to become nationally recruited. He took the varsity job at Vista del Lago as a freshman, produced, improved, and forced college football to come find him. That matters for every young quarterback and every athlete in Moreno Valley who has been told exposure only comes somewhere else.

The bigger the recruiting attention gets, the easier it will be to turn J5 into a list of offers and rankings. But the local story is more important than that: a young quarterback took over early, accepted the pressure of the position, and kept getting better.

NOW COMES THE JUNIOR YEAR

That makes 2026 different.

J5 is no longer the freshman surprise or the sophomore breakout. He enters his true junior season as the established quarterback, the player opposing defenses build their plans around, and one of the most recognizable young football prospects to come out of Moreno Valley in years.

On3 recently placed him among its California quarterbacks to watch for the 2026 season. The Los Angeles Times also identified him among the area’s juniors with strong resumes. National recruiting services are tracking every camp, visit and offer.

But in Moreno Valley, the story is simpler.

The city watched J5 take the keys before most players his age were ready for varsity football.

Now the country is watching what he does with them.
