2026 SEASON ARCHIVE | Game played August 28, 2026 | Retrospective recap compiled October 25, 2026. Record immediately after this game: 1-1.
Rancho Verde’s August 28 game against Canyon of Anaheim ended in a 19–0 loss, moving the Mustangs to 1–1. The offense faced a difficult test, while individual defensive contributions and a 132-yard team rushing effort provided details worth recognizing.
George Campbell III led the reported rushing totals with 48 yards. Isaiah Gilliam added 39, and Khristian Windom Castle contributed 21. Those gains gave Rancho Verde some ground production, although the Mustangs were unable to turn their possessions into points.
Kason Hawkins recorded six tackles. Kaleb Smith added four and intercepted a pass, supplying a takeaway from the secondary. Meech Johnson also made four tackles, including two for loss, while Matthew Craig recorded three tackles for loss and a sack.
The work behind the line and Smith’s interception showed that Rancho Verde had defenders capable of disrupting an opponent. The shutout loss also made the offensive challenge clear: the next step was to turn individual gains into more sustained scoring production.
Early-season games can reveal both needs and useful pieces. For coach Eric Zomalt’s Mustangs, Campbell, Gilliam and Windom Castle contributed to the rushing rotation, and Hawkins, Smith, Johnson and Craig gave the defense specific efforts to build on. The score remained a setback, but it did not erase those contributions.
