SEVEN POINTS ALLOWED, ZERO QUIT: Rancho Verde’s Defense Refuses to Break
MORENO VALLEY — If you only look at Rancho Verde’s 1–3 record, you will miss the most important part of the story.
The Mustangs’ defense is fighting.
Rancho Verde held Serrano to seven points Friday night and gave the offense every possible chance in a 7–3 loss. It was the second straight week the Mustangs kept an opponent in single digits after a 7–0 loss at Murrieta Mesa. In eight quarters of football, Rancho Verde’s defense allowed only 14 total points.
That is not a team that has quit. That is a team demanding that the rest of the operation catch up.
Against Serrano, the Mustang offense managed 94 rushing yards and four passing yards. The struggle was real, and there is no reason to hide from it. Rancho Verde needs more sustained drives, more explosive plays and more finishes in the red zone. But when a defense holds an opponent to one touchdown, the game remains one play away from turning.
Senior linebacker Uriah Celestine leads the team at 7.8 tackles per game, bringing production and presence to the middle of the defense. Junior athlete Kaleb Smith has already collected three interceptions, proving the Mustangs can create takeaways and steal possessions. Sophomore Matthew Craig has recorded a sack, while senior George Campbell III leads the ground attack at 40.3 rushing yards per game.
The Mustangs opened the season with a 29–10 victory over Redlands East Valley. Since then, three consecutive losses have tested their confidence: 19–0 against Canyon of Anaheim, 7–0 against Murrieta Mesa and 7–3 against Serrano. The margin is getting tighter. The defense is getting stronger. The next step is turning close games into wins.
Rancho Verde now has a bye before hosting Moreno Valley on September 25. That is not just the next game. It is another city game, another emotional night and another opportunity to change the direction of the season.
Moreno Valley will arrive angry after its first loss. Rancho Verde will arrive tired of hearing what its record says.
The Mustangs do not need a speech about effort. Their defense has already delivered the message. They need points, precision and one complete night.
Hold the line. Find the end zone. Let the whole city feel the response.
